Permapoesis

Permapoesis is the portmanteau for permanent making. A term I've developed, incorporating permaculture principles, shared Aboriginal knowledges and our own neopeasant lifeways to help reclaim sensible thought and remodel ecological economies of material accountability.

My name is Patrick Jones. I live and labour on Djaara peoples' country. Dja Dja Wurrung is the first language of this land. I acknowledge the six Djaara seasons and pay homage to the regenerative economies upon which Djaara living culture sits. The spirit and logic of which my household draws upon in our everyday productions and lifeways while simultaneously drawing upon our own indigenous peoples through story and the ancestral plants, animals, microbes, mushrooms and uncapitalised medicines that have also emplaced on this country. We recognise the system of racism that terra nullius continues to instil in the dominant culture, and recognise that as people of many diverse white cultures we still hold cultural blinders that our historical trauma sits within and (now) our privilege stands upon.

A number of us have been working pretty hard to organise a trip to Daylesford by Michael Reynolds. He came and gave a workshop on Thursday and a knockout public talk in the town hall that night. Between the workshop and the talk I raced home and put together this footage of the prepwork we volunteers carried out before his arrival and of the workshop itself so as the 300 peeps that came to the town hall in the evening could get a sense of what we had started. One of the local councillors was at the talk and there is word that he is going to pass a motion that this building remain so it can be completed and serve as a demonstration site for experimental building using waste.

Environmental writer Derrick Jensen believes the only level of technology truly sustainable was developed in the Stone Age. Pretty harsh claim at first glance. Then there are the majority of folk who believe technology can redeem us, who believe that only an investment in newer and better technology can rescue us from the mess we’re in. For me this argument is perennially flawed. Technology nearly always creates more problems than it solves. Take dentistry for example. It appears that we have progressed immensely in this field, but this level of technology has only come about as our diet has become more and more disembodied from natural systems; as our diet has been fashioned by food technologists and their commercial patrons.
