Can a poet speak on economy?

Sunday, August 19, 2018

This week I gave a talk as part of the La Trobe University Art Forum lecture series about how my solo work found its way into the all encompassing collective practice of Artist as Family. What happens when artists cease to be co-opted by an industry enframed by the imperatives of capital and augment new economic narratives? A radical-homemaking, permacultural-neopeasantry springs forth!

Artist as Family received this comment on their Instagram page on Aug 17, relating to this talk.

@appleturnover: at the risk of becoming your raving groupie, i must tell you that the work you are all doing, and the talk you gave resonates in so many ways i am transported. as an artist working outside the gallery system, wrestling with the countercultural, the definitions of feminism in choosing to stay home with our children, to homeschool them right through to university level, to have an art practice that looks more like a homesteading practice, to looking at activism, art, food, transport, through a permacultural lens...you’ve expressed so much of what i have been doing and thinking so clearly, with such a holistic understanding. i owe you a debt of gratitude. i have to admit i stopped following Art a few years ago as the crises of our times seemed to render so much of what i encountered as irrelevant compared to everyday acts like growing food, stewarding land, raising children, partnering with animals...i really appreciate how you reconnect the cultural practices. my sweetheart speaks about these bridges similarly but sometimes one needs to also see another person in action. many thanks for sharing your work.
